The Semi-Desert – Corsica Day 4

With more distance to cover, we packed everything up the next morning. As our campsite was at the remote end of a sand-and-rock track, we had to follow it back a few kilometres before making a turn and entering unknown territory. Before us stretched incredible landscapes.

At some point we crossed a crest and were greeted with even more mountains layered behind each other in the distance. The path got sandier and we continued down into the valley. The scorching heat reached the high 30s and while the car was air-conditioned, I did feel the heatwave every time I stepped out to take pictures.

Upon exiting the remote landscapes, we followed the main country road Route de Calvi until we came through Lumio. We had gotten quite hungry and thus were looking forward to some lunch. The little town was located in the hills quite high above the sea level and thus offered a great view of the surrounding area (of which I forgot to take a picture, but here’s a picture of the burger at least).

After replenishing our energy reserves, we continued southwest through Calvi – which struck us as rather unspectacular – and up to Golf de la Revellata, where we decided to go for a swim.

It was there that a very steep mountain pass began, which led many people to turn around. Not us though, since we wanted to progress further down south. As you’d expect from a mountain pass, it was quite narrow and additionally did not feature any actual guardrails, at least none that would stop a 2-Ton Land Rover.

And remember, the rooftop tent and railing do have a weight of over 100 kilos, changing the centre of gravity notably – so you cannot take corners like you would in a sports car. We thus went ahead very carefully.

Once at the other side, it had gotten notably less crowded with people and we set out to find a spot for the night. After a few attempts to follow tracks away from the road which then turned out to be unsuitable, we found an overgrown bush path formerly used by flocks of sheep or goats. We decided to check out where it led to.

Pushing through bush on all sides, we ended up at a clearing that was well-protected from the eyes of onlookers. This would become our campsite for the night. We set up our grill and had a bbq while the sun set behind the mountains.

Lastly, here’s the progress map for the day: from the top right (northernmost point), our trip followed the coast for most part until drove further into the hills to find a campsite (bottom left).

And with that… bonne nuit!
